Unlimited spell slots, endless frustration for your DM, and accessible as early as level 5? The Coffeelock is one of the most infamously despised builds in Dungeons & Dragons. But hey, we’re not here to play the role of your disapproving parents. If you want to embrace the chaos, we’re here to help.
Let’s get started! 1
What is a “Coffeelock”?
The Coffeelock is a multiclass character build that combines the Warlock and Sorcerer classes and uses their abilities to generate infinite spell slots. The entire thing hinges on the following features of each class.
By utilizing these two features, you are technically allowed by Rules As Written (RAW) to accrue more and more spell slots without ever taking a Long Rest. We will get into it more below, but the mechanics are incredibly simple and powerful.

The Mechanics of Coffeelock
To pull this off, you’ll need the following:
- Warlock Level 3:
- Choose the Pact of the Tome boon and grab the Eldritch Invocation Aspect of the Moon. This invocation lets you skip sleep entirely, removing the most obvious barrier to infinite rest cycles.
- Warlock spell slots regenerate after every Short Rest.
- Sorcerer Level 2:
- Unlock Font of Magic, which allows you to convert spell slots into Sorcery Points and then convert those points back into spell slots. Importantly, these newly created spell slots count as “Temporary Spell Slots,” which only reset after a Long Rest.
- The Infinite Loop:
- Use Warlock spell slots, regenerated on a Short Rest, to fuel Sorcery Points.
- Turn Sorcery Points into Temporary Spell Slots.
- Repeat this cycle endlessly since you never Long Rest.
Ba-da-bing ba-da-boom, you are one of the most readibly-avaliable castors in all of fantasy.
Some Issues with the CoffeeLock
There’s one catch to this build: the optional rule introduced in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. It states that characters who go without a Long Rest can accrue exhaustion levels, eventually crippling them. This might seem like a deal breaker, but there are a couple ways to manage it:
- Greater Restoration:
- Use this spell to cure exhaustion levels as they appear.
- With infinite spell slots, obtaining the necessary diamonds is as simple as Create Food and Water with a bit of creativity.
- Warforged Race:
- If you really want to cheese the system, go Warforged. As a construct, you’re immune to exhaustion from lack of rest. Suck it DM’s!
In Conclusion
The Coffeelock is the ultimate expression of abusing RAW.
It’s clever, chaotic, and potentially game-breaking. But at the end of the day, D&D is about having fun. If your table is cool with a little shenanigans and you’re itching to test the limits of the system, this build might just be for you. Just don’t forget to buy your DM a pizza after the session—you’ll owe them that much, at least.
