Brick By Brick: Exciting DND and LEGO Collaboration

Skylar Bohannan (24′) – “Dungeons and Dragons x LEGO Collaboration

Legos, like little building blocks of life, are endlessly entertaining. As a child, my imagination was the limit. Now as time went on, the creativity transferred from one part of my life into another in the form of Dungeons and Dragons. Also with DND, I realized, I am limited to the imagination of and in the stories and interactions of a made-up world.

But what if there were an easier way to bring the creations of our conceptions to life? The LEGO x DND collaboration might be doing just that.

What is the LEGO x Dungeons and Dragons Collaboration?

In the infinite world that is LEGO, there are endless ways for the company to collaborate with others. Not all collaborations are physical either, with one of their most recent and popular events being LEGOxFortnite. The player peak skyrocketed to upwards of 2,447,763, with that first week hovering around the 2 million player mark daily (Bošnjak, D. 2023).

While Dungeons and Dragons sets are still on the way, here are a few others that have been released in the meantime.

Literal Worldbuilding

“DRAGON’S KEEP: JOURNEY’S END” Created by: BOLTBUILDS (JacobM. (2023, January 5).)

Last year LEGO announced the winner of the 50 Years of Dungeons and Dragons contest. First place was led by a builder with the name of BOLTBUILDS, with this amazing creation made of around 3,000 pieces.

Hello and welcome to Dragon’s Keep.. Green Dragons are usually subtle in their behavior, but it seems serious this time. Or is he working with the wizard? Do you dare venture in the depths below the rocks to find out what creatures and traps will test you?

Here is my take on the amazing Dungeons and Dragons theme. The set is just under 3000 pieces, but we were asked to build your dream set, no?

BoltBuilds (n.d.)

Even the introduction to this large build fills you with wonder and excitement of what’s to come. This works not only as a LEGO set description but reads as a possible high-fantasy adventure!

The set contains the following features and designs-

  • Tavern: Pretty self explanatory why this is included.
  • Witches Tower: A multilevel tower that includes an armory, lab, water well, and a trap door (Sounds like a tower of holding with how much it can fit inside!).
  • The Dungeon: Located underneath the tower is a huge cavern, with a huge beholder hanging in the shadows.
  • Crypt: A part of the set for adventures to find gold, if they dare try and find it.

Overall, the set contains everything needed for a tabletop adventure. Of course, with LEGO it can be endlessly changing terrain only stopped by the creativity of the mind. Now this will most likely not end up being the final draft of the Lego set that we as consumers will end up getting. But dndwizards on Instagram has already shown us a glimpse of what is to come.

THE DUNGEONDungeons and Dragons x LEGO collaboration

Dissonate Whispers

Overall, as of late February 2024, there have only been sneak peeks. The latest of these posts came out about a week ago and was posted by LEGO in collaboration with Dungeons and Dragons on Instagram.

As shown above, the video posted to their Instagram is a dark screen that fades into a gelatinous cube, with many little surprises inside! With a quick lookover, we can see some pretty interesting things happening inside the cube.

One such object that popped out to me was the shield that the LEGO skeleton was holding. I am so excited to see a beholder-themed shield, it brings along another string of questions as well. What monsters will be included in the sets, will there be more monster-themed armor, and what race/class types will be introduced?

Some more minor details are included in the cube, but are not as front and centered as the shield is shown. A few gold coins, armor, weaponry, and what I am thinking could be spell books? Something I would enjoy seeing in this set is a possible gelatinous cube, and of course, not one as vivid and real as shown in the video, but just it being inducted in the LEGOxDND collab would make it all the better.

These are all questions that will not be known until the official set comes out.

My Bardic Verse

This is surprisingly something I have never thought about doing in any of my previous one-shots or campaigns. I have tried over and over again with resources such as 3D Printing, Resin Printing, Clay, Online, etc. All to no avail.

The problem I face, and many other players face as well, is the fact you have to build a universe. I have found out through trial and error that building a universe is not very cost effective. While Resin and 3D printing are very detailed, the constant delays and cost to run/fuel these machines can add up quickly.

Now with that being said, LEGO would be great for building terrain. The built-in pegs at the top are capable of being able to help show the distance traveled on a battle map. These same pegs of course are what can be used to link pieces together while still keeping the distance moved in mind. It can easily be laid out before the game, or even put together in a last-minute mission created by the actions of the players.

As mentioned before, we do not know exactly what we are getting out of this LEGOxDND set. But even without the collaboration of the two companies, there is no doubt that my future games will include some form of LEGO contraption.
