Unveiling the Secrets of Beadle and Grimm’s: It’s Goblins

“Unveiling the Secrets of Beadle and Grimm’s: It’s Goblins” Skylar Bohannan (24′)

While Beadle and Grimm’s was nice enough to send us some products to review in the future, Knight’s Digest is in no way getting paid or sponsored for this post.

I was recently looking over some of my favorite Dungeon and Dragon’s social media when one caught my attention. What interested me so much was the amount of detail and overall great products and modules being created.

Then I saw it. Matthew Lillard!

The man that I had grown up watching on the big screen was not only interested in one of my favorite hobbies but owned a company inspired by it! As you can tell by the title, that company was Beadle and Grimm’s.

Getting an Interview

While I knew that getting an interview with the actual co-founder would be impossible. I still decided to reach out to see if I could still get some questions answered about the company.

So I reached out to their Instagram, @beadleandgrimms (while you are there might as well check out @knightsdigest!). Surprisingly I got a quick response from them, but this is where it got weird. The response told me to reach out to their Head Production Goblin, Jon.

Wait a second, Head Production Goblin? What does that even mean? I was excited and wanted to know more about these goblins that are seemingly running a company. I would later go on to email a few times back and forth and get my answers.

Interview With A Goblin

The following are the answers from Jon, the Head Production Goblin that I was so eager to talk to.

Beadle and Grimm’s

What is your favorite thing about working at Beadle and Grimm’s?

Being mercilessly teased by the Director of Human Resources Goblin. That, and getting great feedback from a happy customer.

Are there any other interesting titles such as yours? (Head Production Goblin)

Yes, but they pale in significance to mine. Data Analyst Goblin. Party Planning Goblin. And of course, the dreaded Actuary Goblin.

What goals do Beadle and Grimm’s have for the future, and the future of Dungeons and Dragons?

The number one daily goal is to not get eaten by the thing in the mailroom. As far as Dungeons & Dragons goes, we (understandably) have very little say in their future. We do however have some very exciting plans for 2024 with D&D, including our Platinum Edition of Vecna: Eve of Ruin, our Golden Anniversary Edition of Quests from the Infinite Staircase, and several other products that I can’t mention yet, on fear of being delivered to said mailroom.

Can you share any notable milestones or achievements that Beadle and Grimm’s have reached since its inception?

“The Nobel Foundation in Stockholm Sweden has nominated us for several Nobel prizes, but we have yet to win. They often cite Matthew’s work in Wing Commander as the reason we keep getting snubbed, but we suspect it’s his work in Summer Catch that’s really swaying the judges. Also, 2023 marked 5 years that B&G has been around and we marked it by offering exclusive B&G Anniversary Dice – a set for Rogue dice for Beadle and a set for Barbarian dice for Grimm. The Grimm dice sold out immediately. The Beadle dice are still available. Beadle was Matthew’s character, so… just sayin’. “

Are there any processes that the company does when creating modules that you feel go above and beyond?

Absolutely. Our multipurpose room has a built in gladiator pit that we use when it’s time to assign projects. It’s not to the death. That would be unreasonable. You only have to knock your opponent unconscious. The upside is the Project Manager is extra motivated to really bring their creativity and put their blood, sweat, and dislocated teeth into the project. Also, we have the Vulnerability to Profit Margins trait – so we put an unreasonable amount of our project budget into the actual product.

Products By Beadle and Grimm’s

Is there an overall favorite module that the team loves?

How dare you. That’s like asking what your favorite movie is. Or song. Doesn’t it really depend on your mood? Am I feeling Curse of Strahd? Expedition to the Barrier Peaks? Or, Torm forbid, The Wild Beyond the Witchlight!

If players had the chance to get one module from Beadle and Grimm’s, which one would you recommend?

Again with the Sophie’s Choice? I refuse to answer this question!  (niuR fo evE :anceV)

Platinum Edition for Vecna: Eve of Ruin (D&D) by Beadle and Grimm’s

If players were just starting, what would you recommend they check out at Beadle and Grimm’s?

“Noob players? Grab some Character Class Dice, a Player Journal, and a B&G Trucker Hat. Because nothing screams table-top gamer like a trucker hat, right? Right?

Thoughts on Dungeons and Dragons

If you could be any species/race in Dungeons and Dragons what would it be?

Goblin of course. And I’m not just saying that because I know this is going to pass in front of our Chief Marketing Goblin.

What monster from the Monster Manual would best describe Beadle and Grimm’s?

“Empyrean! “…universally beautiful, statuesque, and self-assured.” Oh wait… did you mean me, or the company? If the company, then – gibbering mouther. “Of all the terrors created by foul sorcery, gibbering mouthers are among the most wicked and depraved.”

If Beadle and Grimm’s were a homebrew magical item in the Dungeons and Dragons Universe, what would it be and what properties would it have?

Hat of Insufferable Circular Reasoning

(Wondrous Item, Too Common)
As a free action, this cursed item allows the wearer to fixate on the tiniest of product elements and argue both the pros and cons of that element for 100 rounds, always ending where they started.

Closing Thoughts on Beadle and Grimm’s

Overall this was one of my favorite interviews that Knight’s Digest has conducted (if you want to see another interview, check out Gals & Goblins: An Actual Play Podcast to Keep Your Eyes On).

Looking into the world through a goblin’s eyes has been very informative. Not only that but the sense of humor that Beadle and Grimm’s has at their company made the interview so much fun. While Knight’s Digest is a small blogging company, it was awesome to see the seriousness that they took with these questions.

When companies, like Beadle and Grimm’s, have fun it reminds me of the whole reason we all play TTRPGs. For the fun of it!
