How to Get Rich Quick: Tomb of Horrors Style!

In the far reaches of the world, under a lost and lonely hill, lies the sinister TOMB OF HORRORS. This labyrinthine crypt is filled with terrible traps, strange and ferocious monsters, rich and magical treasures, and somewhere within rests the evil demi-lich.
– Tomb of Horrors

Rich and magical treasures you say?

The Tomb of Horrors has been a module that has enamored (and enraged) thousands of players since its debut at the Origins 1 convention. The author, Gary Gygax himself, wrote and designed the adventure to challenge the players at his own table who had bullishly stated that their high-level characters could overcome anything that the Dungeon Master could throw at them. Besides beating his table’s PC’s, he wanted to show fans that AD&D could still be a challenge for those level 20 groups out there.

With this being the case, Tomb of Horrors has infamously been called one of the hardest modules that TSR, Inc published. Yet, similar to a Dark Souls game, the module has been loved and sought out for the challenge and original adventuring spirit that some fans argue is gone nowadays. But if you were to put this in your game, would it be worthwhile for your characters? How rich would you get if you claimed all the treasure in the Tomb of Horrors module?

How Powerful was Acererak?

Acererak’s was a powerful demi-lich and his lair comprises of 33 compressed yet labyrinthine rooms containing explosive danger, magical traps, and cunning tricks that will make even the most patient player grind their teeth. Except, there be gold out in them hills—and by them hills, I mean in about 12 of the rooms.

So grab your Tenser Discs and your bag of holding, because we are going to see how much treasure is actually in the Tomb of Horrors.

The Tomb of Horrors, published 1978.

Room 8: Gargoyle Lair

After getting passed the trapped hallway the players find themselves faced with a mutated four armed gargoyle trapped in temporal stasis…until the players walk into the room. After defeating the gargoyle, you can snag it’s sick neck collar that is studded with 10 gleaming blue quartz stones that will fetch you 1000 GP.

Let’s mark that down.

Room 11: The Three Armed Statue

You’ve already scored 1000 GP and a sick choker for your next party that everyone is gonna rave about. As you progress through the dungeon, you’ll find an illusion that is hiding the passageway to room 11.

Inside the small room is an 8 foot replica statue of the Gargoyle you fought in room 8. Except this statue has it’s fourth arm broken off and cast to the floor. After investigating, the party can find that if they put a gem worth 100 GP, it’ll fit perfectly in the palm of each hand. Funny enough, your new gems from room 8 would fit quite perfectly. For a dungeon that is considered confusing to a fault, I actually think this is a nice reference to the fight you just had.

Now it’s time to spend money to make money. After placing 9 (count’em 9!) of the gems you just acquired into the statue’s grubby hands, the gems disintegrate and reward the player’s stubbornness with an Invisible Gem of Seeing, revealing it in the palm of the fourth hand*.* Now, back in AD&D, magic items weren’t out there willy nilly. These were rare and expensive finds.

I’ll let you see for yourself how much that Invisible Gem of Seeing is worth—you better hold onto it tightly as well, as it is literally an invisible gem.

Room 13: Chamber of Three Chests

The Chamber of Three Chests isn’t in my personal opinion as interesting as the other rooms so we are going to progress pretty quickly. You go through another illusion in room 10 and enter this room and tank a couple of hit points.

The three chests contain the following:

Gold Chest: Small time monsters

Silver Chest: Treasure!

Wood Chest: Oh my god an animated skeleton of a GIANT instantly teleports in and ALWAYS strikes first with it’s two scimitars and magic immunity. Don’t open this one.

Inside the Silver Chest is a ring of protection +1 and a clear crystal box worth 1,000 GP. Defeat that weirdly intense Giant Skeleton and add it to the list!

Room 14: Chapel of Evil

I would like to pause and say that 5th edition books are really missing out because the descriptions that Gygax used for these rooms really crack me up.

For example, you walk into the next room in this dungeon and it is a Chapel with lots of different symbols of good alignment to make the character players think that the Demi-Lich Acererak is a possibly chill guy. But instead of alluding to it, the book just says this:

Yet there are also depicted various religious symbols of goad alignment, and a faint aura of good can be magically detected. What a puzzle! Could the demi-lich actually have been of good alignment?

I just love the dorkish enthusiasm that are just intended for the Dungeon Master reading the module.

In this Chapel there are a rows of pews with our first encounter with something else besides Gold Pieces and magic items. Hope you maxed out your strength score because these sacks with money signs on them are getting heavy!

Room 18: False Crypt Protected by Fear Gas

Another notable thing about the Tomb of Horrors is that there is a lot of trickery that takes a lot of investigation, a lot of logical reasoning, and a lot of intense note taking throughout the dungeon. On page 2 of the module, Gygax warns the DM that this is a “Thinking person’s module” (in all caps btw), and if your party isn’t down for that, this might not be their module.

But even if you’re not a “thinking person”, I think that we can all agree that a solid gold couch, in which a fake Acererak lays on, is the coolest fucking thing ever. There’s also a jade coffer that holds 6 healing potions, a begemmed crown, and a sack of loot/scrolls.

Room 22: The Cavern of Gold and Silver Mists

Now so far, I have been adding to our treasure hoard by assuming that the party has the best luck. I preface this because in the next room, we are given two sacks. One pretty straightforward, a large sack that contains 50 pieces each of copper, silver, electrum, gold and platinum. It appears to be a normal sack, but it radiates magic if it is checked, for it is a small bag of holding (filled weight 5 pounds, 250 pound weight limit inside, 30 cubic feet volume capacity).

The small sack, on the other hand, requires you to roll a d10 to find out what is inside. I am going to assume we roll a 9 and receive the bracers of defense (just because I like you so much).

We have more money than god right now but let’s not stop this treasure hunt yet, after The Cavern of Gold and SIlver Mists, you enter the Pillared Throne room which features a grand obsidian throne. On that throne holds a scepter and a crown—both cursed but your buyers don’t know that. Add an additional 37,000 GP for both of those items but be ready to confront some angry demons once you leave the Tomb of Horrors because they will be summoned once you leave the vicinity.

Room 26: Small Room with a Door of Electric Blue

I would hope by now that at this point in the dungeon, you know that while there is plenty of treasure to be found, but you may want to bring a high level curse breaker or at least be on top of your toes before you grab that nice shiny gem.

This room is no exception, you walk into a small room and find a sarcophagus that holds a mummy. One of the eyes will have a tempting amethyst worth 5,000 GP. That’s chump change to you at this point, but since you already have a bag of holding—why not throw it in the rest? Just be ready to confront an angry undead after you pluck out it’s eye.

Room 27: The Portal of Scintillating Violet

After naming 27 rooms, you gotta wonder when Gygax broke out the thesaurus.

In this room, you’ll find a collection of rotting skeletons and various items killed by the magically enchanted shields and swords on the walls. Yet, if you’re careful, there is plenty of treasure to be found.

You might have to push over a skeleton or two, but if you take your time you should be able to clean up around 20 gems, each worth 10 GP, numerous equipment from on or around the bodies, a +1 flail (sweet!), and a Potion of Diminuation.

Room 30: The False Treasure Room

Another false room, huh?

If I was the Dungeon Master for this room, I would personally think that this is Acererak’s funniest joke. This is because the “false” treasure is an iron box full of rare gems worth around 500,000 GP…until you leave the area of the Tomb of Horrors. Then it’s just a bunch of quartz valued at 1 GP each. Still not a bad haul by any means. The same goes for the platinum pieces, the 10,000 PP will turn into 10,000 CP on the way out.

For those really hurting for cash. There is a decorative vase in the room with 100 GP worth of coins on it’s surface. Take a short rest here and recoup your health points and slip a dagger in and pluck those coins out.

I know your bag of holding is busting at the seams, but we have one last room.

Room 33: The Crypt of Acererak the Demi-lich

You are one room away from getting everything you wanted (besides all the curses, demons, and other logisticals facing you as you leave the Tomb of Horrors)!

The last room is the actually Acererak’s crypt and hopefully all those rooms left you with either some health points left or some wicked magical weapons because you’ve got a demi-lich to fight. But that’s not the point of the article, the point is that this is the last room to gather some loot.

The biggest payday is in Acererak’s skull after defeating him, there are two large red rubies in each socket worth 50,000 GP each. In addition there are gems, magical cursed items, and diamond teeth to pry.

But now that everything is accounted for, how much would you actually walk away with? The table below tells you the Dungeons and Dragons currency equivalent, but how much would that be in real life?

How Set Would You Be After Looting Acererak’s Dungeon?

Now, since we know how much 1 Gold Piece would be in Dungeons and Dragons, because we did all the math here in this article, we know that we can start working off by converting all of our loot into straight up Gold Pieces.

After all is said and done, we are walking away $318,527,688.00 million dollars. Now, that honestly makes sense for the amount of wealth that I would expect an “immortal” lich to have. The only question left would be if that amount of money would be worth risking your life for and walking out with more than just a handful of curses. I’d be interested to see how other dungeons add up and if you would like to join me on that journey, please subscribe to our newsletter below!
