The Most Reliable Dimension 20 Campaigns Ranked: A Fan’s Guide

“The Most Reliable Dimension 20 Campaigns Ranked: A Fan’s Guide” Skylar Bohannan (24′)

Dimension 20 already has a fantastical lineup that will be able to keep you entertained for hours on end. Ever since 2018 with the introduction of Fantasy High, there have been almost weekly releases on their platform, Dropout.

Six years is plenty of time to put out some top-notch shows. Their productions have reflected their love for the game as time has gone on. But the important question is, what campaign should you start with?

Dimension 20’s Campaigns

Now it is important to state before going too far into the rankings. There are campaigns in the Dimension 20 Universe that I have not watched/finished. Not saying that they are not great add-ons to the DND community, but not everything can pique my interest.

The list below is vast and includes 20 game settings. I have put the campaigns into categories of the shows I have watched versus the ones I have not.

Dimension 20 Campaigns

With this in mind, there is no reason you shouldn’t go watch these! Dimension 20 has shown that, while they want to reach out to the Dungeon and Dragons communities, they are not afraid to try other TTRPGs.

Overall, though, I am very familiar with every main campaign and short series that they have come out with. In all honesty, Dimension 20 really delivers the magic to campaigns that don’t run for years on end. In addition, several of these have a second season, so you tend not to feel like the story is over.

Ranking Dimension 20 Campaigns

Okay, here we go. While an endearing list and opinioned ruling, here are the order in which I enjoyed Dimension 20’s campaigns. As mentioned before, D20 has a staggering list, with 20 unique settings. This article will be covering yours truly top five, and why I think you should give them a chance.

5th Place – StarStruck Odyssey

Starstruck was originally created by Brennan Lee Mulligan’s Mother, Elaine Lee, as a stage play. It would then go on to be created as a comic with illustrations by Michael Kaluta, under the same name.

This space opera includes 18 episodes of traveling across the stars. This unlikely but hilarious group comes together to not only solve their own personal problems but to save the universe itself.

The game mechanics are pulled from Star Wars 5th edition. It is very refreshing to have them take the bones of Dungeons and Dragons 5e and merge them with the sci-fi fun of the Star Wars universe.

My favorite player for the season for sure has to be Big Barry Syx, played by Brian Murphy. This lovable clone not only had one of the darkest backgrounds in the campaign, but some of the best moments of comedy. The series as a whole would be missing one of the best characters if not included. It felt like an awesome character that not only others could get along with, but an outlet for Murph to show off his improv skills.

Verdict

While being last on my top five, this is still out of ALL of their games. I had a tough time ranking this one. Hopefully, if they release a season two (please please please), it will lead it to rank higher on my list.

Overall, the reason this shined is the fact that you can tell Brennan put a lot of love into this. Him having the chance to bring his mother’s creation to the tabletop setting must have been a great project. I would recommend checking out their interviews on the subject on Dropout!

4th Place – Fantasy High

Hoot Growl Hoot Growl!

Ahh, Fantasy High, where it all started. Dimension 20 was basically born from this campaign, and for good reason. With three seasons under their belt, the story just keeps expanding. An original D20 creation, this show not only introduced Dropout to Dungeons and Dragons but was a great learning initiative as some of the players were not as adept at the fantasy world of DND yet.

Fantasy High takes place mostly at Augefort Adventuring Academy in the town of Elmville. These six intrepid heroes meet at this academy, where they must join up as a party of misfits. They end up all coming together in detention on the first day of school. Strange summoning and obstacles cross their paths as they just try to pass their midterms! Will they be able to save the school from total annihilation?

Verdict

I ended up loving this series, and I can only hope for more. At certain points, I felt like I was also learning mechanics, and the not-so-serious nature of the campaigns made me feel like it was possible to just have fun with the story and worry about everything else later.

My personal favorite for the season goes to Fig Faeth, played by Emily Axford. This rebel teen is sure to make you laugh and remind you of your rebellious youth. Puberty for teens is always hard, but also imagine finding out your half demon, what a bummer.

Recently, D20 actually auctioned off some of their original props to be donated, with funds going to Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, check out the results here!

3rd Place – Neverafter

Top Three is here, and Neverafter deserves it. This version of your fairytales is not so enchanting. While this campaign only has one season, I can not help but put it up at the third spot on this list. Dimension 20 released this towards the end of 2022, with it ending in April of 2023.

The stories growing up of the likes of Pinocchio, Cinderella, and Snow White all seem to exist in this universe. Just not the ones we are familiar with. Neverafter grabs these stories and twists and corrupts them, bringing us to the setting of Neverafter. In this world, a group of storybook characters will come together and try to stop the undoing of their dark and grotesque worlds, writing faith for themselves.

Still pulling from the Dungeons and Dragons 5e rules, Brennan Lee Mulligan and the intrepid heroes bring to life these messed-up versions of the stories we grew up on. The characters that I have to praise are seriously a toss-up up and that is what makes the campaign so good.

They all have their own quirks and moments in the show, but the one whose story shines just a bit brighter is Pinocchio, played by Lou Wilson. I have to give Lou a round of applause for committing to his high-pitched version of his character throughout the entire campaign. In a world where the story’s consequences are serious, watching Lou play his character will bring laughs around the table every time.

2nd Place – A Crown of Candy

If you loved Game of Thrones, then get ready for a Crown of Candy. If you are looking for a high fantasy game of dungeons and dragons, then you are in the right place.

Not only does A Crown of Candy reach the second spot on my Dimension 20 list, but the reasoning for it backs it up. You know how I mentioned that it was perfect for those who loved Game of Thrones? Well, I hope you loved Candyland as well, because while it has serious undertones and amazing world-building, just know the world-building is made of candy.

Following the royal House of Rocks family (made of candy) with some loyal to the family (also made of candy) in tow, we visit different lands made of food. All based in the land of Calorum, we watch as they navigate the terrain, not knowing what twist of fate or betrayal will happen next.

Verdict

As mentioned before, the world-building is great. When I say everything, everything is made of some sort of edible assortment. Seeing them pass from lands of cheese to lands of meat and so on, you can’t help but think what other food items have been given life.

In this setting, I would have to say the icing on top would be King Amethar of House Rocks. The command and seriousness Lou can give in his performance as a king is well done. On the comedy side of things, Sir Theobald (Murph) or Chancellor Lapin (Zac Oyama) would have to be a close second due to their interactions with one another.

1st Place – Unsleeping City

Dimension 20 Cast

Last but not least, we have arrived at what I cast as the best show on Dimension 20, The Unsleeping City—some background before we start. Brennan Lee Mulligan lived and grew up in New York, where this story occurs.

Big cities have always had a certain charm and whimsy that can’t be explained besides a magical feeling. In this setting, what if there actually was magic around every corner? With two seasons done, I just want more and more. While one aired during COVID, with them going online, I was still stuck to my screen watching as they played.

This setting just feels real to me. A group of New Yorkers (and one from New Jersey), take to the unforeseen side of New York. The Unsleeping City. Some of the players are familiar with the magical side of New York. But for the other half, we get to experience what a normal person might go through when they get their whole world flipped upside down.

We follow this band of heroes as they chase and are chased around the Big Apple. Dark forces are at work, and they must figure it out before their city is taken over. What I really love about The Unsleeping City would be the adaptability the magical folk have. Just because they are full of magic doesn’t mean they also aren’t native New Yorkers.

Verdict

While all the characters have a special place in my heart, Pete the Plug (played by Ally Beardsley) and Kingston Brown (played by Lou Wilson) stand at the top. Dimension 20 does a great job of endowing titles to their players. Pete as the Vox Phantasma and Kingston as Vox Populi is a great combination between the two. Ally and Lou do not often become close as players, or at least one-on-one most of the time. As the representative of both sides of New York, they come together to lead both sides of their realms.
